10 things I wish I knew before I started Quilting

1. Say goodbye to any spare cash. Quilting is not a cheap hobby.

2. Say goodbye to any spare space in your home. The piles of fabric you have bought take up a lot of room.

3. Learn to cut fabric sparingly. You can waste some of your beautiful fabric if you don't learn how to cut properly. Using a rotary cutter and self healing board is a must.

4. Find friends to quilt with. It is a hobby that can easily be done with others and you can all learn from each other.

5. You Tube is great. There are lots of tutorials out there. Find your favourite.

6. Find a source for cheap fabric. Buying from some fabric stores can be very pricey so shop around.

7. Be careful buying on line - read exactly what the size is and is it in inches or CM's I once bought forty 5cm squares thinking I was going to get forty 5inch squares... only managed to make a bag not a lap quilt as I wanted to!

8. Buy a decent Sewing machine. Spend as much as you can afford on your sewing machine.

9. Clean and service your machine regularly. If you look after your machine you can quilt happily for many years.

10. Be happy earning only 2 pence an hour if you do manage to sell your quilts.
