Sashing and Borders

I have been adding small sashing strips to some of my blocks to increase their size so that they will be able to be joined together around a big central star. I did not want to do the normal configuration of 'top, bottom, left, right' I wanted the border to be continuous.

This was for a couple of reasons, the look obviously but also because the block was 11.5 inches square and I had fat quarters with 12.5 inches of fabric left... so it meant I did not have much waste at all.

To achieve this you need to stop sewing about an inch before the end when you sew on the first strip. This leaves about 2.5 inches left to sew later.

The second strip is then sewn from the end of the first strip all along the block and finishing at the far side.

The third and fourth strips are done in exactly the same way.

We then return to the first strip which now needs to be finished off.

Lay the fabric back down and sew the un

stitched seam.

When you finally iron this seam flat, no one will be able to see where you started or finished this border.
