I am just about to teach someone how to make 'Flying Geese' blocks. I have made them in 4 different ways myself, so I wanted to see which was the easiest, quickest, neatest and uses the least amount of fabric etc. So here are my findings.
Method 1.
This method uses a rectangle for the 'geese' and squares which are then sewn diagonally on the two short ends of the 'geese'. Sometimes called Flip and sew or corner flip.
This wastes a little fabric (the triangles from the rectangles and the waste triangles from the sky.)
This method is not the neatest
method as you can make errors when you sew on the squares.
You also have to mark each of the squares with diagonal lines which takes time.
It is quite simple but results are not great if you are not accurate.
Method 2

This method uses a large square of fabric which you then sew two smaller squares to and then press and cut them then sew two more squares to them. (Sounds complicated - well it is.) this method makes 4 at a time which makes it nice and speedy.
Method 3

Cut out Triangles and join them. This has very little waste, it is however time consuming and if your sewing is a little off it will show.
Method 4
Paper piecing. People are often scared of this method. They hear Paper Piecing and run for the hills. (I know I did) however I have discovered paper piecing with freezer paper and this is now my preferred method. This method does have a little waste however it is very accurate (even for someone who's sewing leaves something to be desired) it is a great method for making a large quantity of geese for example if you are using them in a border. Once you learn the technique it is so fast and effective.
But that is a whole other tutorial. If you live near me I would be happy to show you how to do this method.
Which method do you like to use? Please let me know.
