Climbing Mountains

This quilt top is made using a pattern called Mountain Peaks. I have used Batik fabrics for this and the colours are bright and beautiful. Batiks are great fabrics to work with as they are a little firmer than some other cottons and the patterns and colours are always different so you never quite know what each section will look like which I love.

This is a fairly simple pattern and should be made of 10 inch squares and is great if you have pre-cuts or a layer cake. I had fat quarters and because I could only get 2 10 inch squares out of a fat quarter I decided to make the squares 8 inches so finished with a smaller quilt. but I do not mind. I didn't really want a double.

Either way the pattern is the same. You need 40 coloured squares and 40 background squares of the same size. I again used yardage for these background squares.

Pair up a plain and pattern square and make 2 half square triangles. One needs to be set as a Right hand triangle and the other as a Left hand triangle. This is how you get both sides of the mountain.

You should end up with two equal piles of triangles. These blocks are then cut again. You need to measure the width of the blocks, divide that by 4 and that is how wide each strip should be.

Then the strips are inverted and sewn back together as shown above.

Each block is then paired and sewn together to form a mountain. I then sewed four mountains, in 5 rows. I had some of the Dark Blue batik left, which I used for the border. I just have to quilt it now (which I should finish early next week) and then it will be up for grabs on my Etsy page. If you would like to learn to make this quilt with me then give me a shout.
